AI usage: what's counted
AI usage: what's counted
my-id.ca uses AI in several places — matching fields on a form, reading a photo of an ID, answering questions in chat. Settings → AI Usage shows how much of that work your account has used.
What the page shows
Four periods:
- Today
- Last 7 days
- Last 30 days
- Lifetime
Each split two ways:
- Web app — everything you do at my-id.ca
- Extension — AI work triggered by the Chrome extension while filling forms on other sites
The split is genuinely useful. High extension numbers mean autofill is doing the heavy lifting on complicated web forms. High web numbers mean chat, PDF filling, and document reading.
You can also just ask the assistant — "show my AI usage" — and get the same figures.
Tokens are a measure, not a bill
The numbers are tokens, the standard unit of AI work. On a personal account they are shown for visibility, not charged for. A long conversation costs more tokens than a short one; reading a dense multi-page PDF costs more than filling a five-field form. None of that appears on an invoice.
What is actually capped
One AI action is metered on the free plan:
Extracting data from an uploaded file — handing a stored file to the assistant and asking it to pull values into your profile. 5 per month on Free, unlimited on Plus.
Everything else — asking questions, filling PDFs, reading an attached photo, creating notes and events — is not counted against a monthly allowance.
See What's free, and what Plus adds.
Where your data goes
Nowhere outside my-id.ca. All AI processing that touches your data runs on servers my-id.ca operates — it is not sent to a third-party AI provider. That is the reason the app can be comfortable reading a photo of your passport.
See the Trust page for the full breakdown, and Your data and privacy.
Using less, if you want to
Not usually necessary, but if you are watching the counters:
- Be specific in chat. A precise question is answered in one exchange; a vague one takes three.
- Attach the file instead of describing it. Reading a PDF once beats a conversation about what is in it.
- Clear a chat that has wandered. Long histories carry forward.
- Do not re-run a fill to see if it does better. Fix the profile field instead — see Fix a wrong value in your profile.

Frequently asked questions
- Am I charged for tokens?
- No. The counter is visibility, not billing. The only metered AI action on the free plan is extracting data from stored files — five a month.
- Why is my extension usage separate from the web app?
- Because they are different workloads. Splitting them tells you whether your AI use is coming from autofill on websites or from working inside the app.
- How do I check without opening Settings?
- Ask the assistant: 'show my AI usage'. It reports the same numbers.
